I'm old enough to remember when the channel still played videos. I'm old enough to remember some of the greatest shows the channel ever had like Remote Control and Singled Out (ok, I seriously can't say that with a straight face, but they were pretty awesome at the time.) Who knew that while watching early episodes of The Real World it would be the beginnings of an entire genre of shows?!
As time went by and Music videos became few and far between, we'd race home from school to watch TRL- even if 60% of the countdown was boy bands, the chance to see Bush, Korn or Limp Bizkit was good enough to suffer through it.
We saw 120 Minutes, come and go then come back again(!!!) Alternative Nation rocked our world, and Daria was the poster child for disgruntled teens everywhere. There were Movie Awards and Video Music Awards, Beavis and Butthead, a bunch of Jackasses, Headbangers Ball (still one of the coolest shows on TV EVER!)
There was Say What Karaoke - which to this day still makes me hate the song Hungry Like The Wolf because it was on every god damn day!!
We were MADE, we experienced True Life and what it was like to have kids at 16. We were introduced to some rich kids from Laguna, some Guido-Juiceheads from New Jersey. And last but not least, I have to throw in perhaps one of the most epic shows to ever take over the airwaves, MTV Unplugged.
All in all, it's been a great 30 years- even if it's not still all about the music, heck that's what Radio 92.9's here for, right?! Our kids will just have to learn what music videos are from MTV2, MTVu and all 36 other variations of the channel.
Good stuff. MTV turned 30 on Aug. 1 and I turned 40 on Aug. 2.
